STRP Western Pacific Campaigner Wences Magun presented a moving and well-received account of his work to establish Marine Conservation Deeds in Papua New Guinea at the Intenrational Sea Turtle Symposium, held in Brisbane, Australia, this year. He was an invited presenter at the international conference, which was attended by more than 800 sea turtle experts from around the world. The conference focus was community conservation, so Wences' work there was a great model.

•As a community oriented conservation area, Sect 41 & 42 of the Organic Law on Prov. & LLGs (Consolidated to No 29 of 1998) was used (refer to a copy)
• It helps communities create and manage protected areas for recreation, scientific, conservation or sustainable use of resources
•It helps communities to have traditional rights and cultural connections to land and sea recognized, and enables them to record traditional knowledge of an area
