California State Legislators have come out in opposition to any weakening of mercury-in-fish advisories by the FDA. The
FDA recently released a draft report for public comment, which attempts to
average the mercury from seafood exposure across the U. S. population
while downplaying the risks to the most vulnerable populations, which
are women, children, women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
and people who eat a lot of fish. Using such data to set standards for
mercury-in-seafood, or the weakening or removal of the current FDA
advisory, would adversely affect the health of millions of Americans,
especially children.
