Thousands Support Marine Mammal Protection in International Fisheries

New Regulations for Imported Seafood Needed
August 30th, 2010

More than 2,000 marine mammal and sea turtle lovers joined Sea Turtle Restoration Project/TIRN and ocean protection groups in supporting new regulations for imported seafood that would ensure protections for marine life as required by the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Today we filed a petition with more than 2,000 individuals from around the U. S. and Canada as well as a coalition letter with a dozen groups calling for the immediate enforcement of the laws that require any imported seafood meet at least U.S. standards for protecting whales, dolphins and other marine mammals from being caught and killed or injured as bycatch. See the letter and petition in PDF format by clicking here. Download and read detailed comments prepared with our legal partners.

August 30, 2010, was the deadline for comment for the first step in developing such regulations by U.S. fishery officials. To keep engaged on this and other issues please sign up for our email activist alerts and newsletters by going to our home page.
