Thousands Support ESA Listing for Hawaiian False Killer Whales

February 15th, 2011

Thousands of supporters used our online tools to submit comments to the National Marine Fisheries Service in support of their proposal to add the Hawaiian insular population of false killer whales to the Endangered Species Act (ESA). These beautiful and intelligent marine mammals are being driven to extinction by deadly longline fishing and the overall degradation of their ocean habitat by overfishing and pollution.

The Hawaiian longline fishery kill dozens of  endangered sea turtles, marine mammals, and seabirds every year. Our recent legal victory resulted in a huge reduction in the number of allowable loggerhead sea turtles killed in this fishery, from 46 back to the previous limit of 17. If the false killer whales gain ESA protection we will have another chance to reduce the deadly impacts of this fishery for the benefit of all marine life.
