The Heartbreak Turtle Today produced by the Sea Turtle Restoration Project chronicles the struggle of the Kemp's ridley sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico. Their population fell to near extinction levels in 1985 and then began a slow recovery as the United States and Mexico worked together to protect nesting beaches and introduce the Turtle Excluder Device to be used on shrimp trawls. Although their recovery may be slowed by the impact of the BP oil spill in 2010, work continues to protect them at nesting beaches and in their migration and foraging routes.
