Florida Bottom Longline Fishery Guilty of Not Protecting Sea Turtles After BP Oil Spill

An endangered sea turtle with a longline hook lodged deep in its throat.

Our ongoing legal challenge against the deadly Florida bottom longline fishery, which was found to kill hundreds of endangered sea turtles beyond its legal quota, had a recent victory when the federal court ruled that the National Marine Fisheries Service failed to do a proper analysis of the effects of the BP oil spill of 2010 on the current management of the fishery.

This victory has resulted in a detailed legal brief where Turtle Island Restoration Network and our expert allies have laid out the deadly patterns of this longline fishery and our remedies to provide greater protections for the endangered sea turtles routinely killed.
