Scientists are predicting the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico will cover approximately 5,900 square miles, an area the size of Connecticut. Dead zones are found worldwide, but the human-caused dead zone located in the Gulf of Mexico off the Louisiana and Texas coast is the second largest in the world.

Shrimp trawling is one of the primary threats to sea turtle survival in the United States. Thanks to your actions the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council decided to keep in place an existing shrimp fishing permit moratorium to protect sea turtles.
SPAWN’s habitat restoration crew and native plant nursery staff have spent the last few months collecting plant seeds from diverse habitats throughout the Lagunitas Creek Watershed. These seeds are collected for use in our habitat restoration projects, and are from areas where we have permission and permits. Native seeds and plants play a critical role in restoring watershed lands by providing wildlife habitat, reducing the spread of invasive plants, and stabilizing slopes that could be prone to erosion.

The San Diego City Council voted in favor of the bag ordinance on July 19, 2016, making San Diego the 150th city to ban plastic bags.
