The Gulf of Mexico is home to five of the world’s species of sea turtles including the critically endangered Kemp’s ridley which nests in Texas. In 1978 all sea turtles found in the Gulf of Mexico were listed as either endangered or threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.
