TITLE: Environmental Scientist Associate
TYPE: Full-time (One-year appointment with possibility of renewal)
Location: Olema, CA
The Environmental Scientist Associate assists the Watershed Conservation Director with large and small scale habitat restoration and conservation projects and is a key part of a team working to restore creek habitat to recover critically endangered coho salmon in Marin County, CA. The right candidate is capable of strenuous physical labor, enjoys working outdoors and in an office, and works well as part of a team as well as independently.
What You’ll Do:
Habitat Restoration and Maintenance (70%)
- Carry out habitat restoration projects
- Install and maintain native plants and trees
- Install and maintain erosion control features
- Collect, clean, and organize native seeds
- Work with and oversee construction contractors
- Monitor restoration projects for effectiveness
- Perform project maintenance
- Invasive species removal
- Install plant protective measures
- Feed/fertilize/water/mulch plantings
- Repair and replace drip irrigation infrastructure
- Lead and supervise interns and volunteers to carry out tasks
Project Assistance (15%)
- Scientific study data collection of hydrology and floodplain topography
- Adult and juvenile salmonid species population monitoring
- Project planning and design
- Documentation and reporting
Volunteer Management and Outreach (10%)
- Plan and lead volunteer events
- Supervise and train volunteers
- Database entry
- Volunteer recruitment
Other (5%)
- Native plant nursery maintenance
- Facilities repair
- Project assistance as needed
What You’ll Bring: the basics
- Experience in habitat restoration techniques (including erosion control, seeding, irrigation, planting)
- Experience leading groups and supervising volunteers
- Knowledge of, or fast ability to learn, native and non-native flora and fauna
- Understanding of ecological restoration and ecology
- Interest in stream restoration and hydrology
- Strong skills in data collection and entry
- Flexible and adaptable approach
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resources, ecology, hydrology, fisheries biology, or another related field
What You’ll Bring: what sets you apart!
- Experience with stream restoration projects
- Experience operating heavy machinery (skid-steer, tractor, backhoe, etc.)
- Experience handling endangered species, fish, or other wildlife
- Experience with salmonid biology and research
- Experience with Arc GIS and GPS
- Interest or experience in marine wildlife conservation
LOCATION: Candidates must commute daily to the Turtle Island Restoration Network’s offices in beautiful, rural West Marin, CA near Point Reyes National Seashore, to nearby work sites and meetings throughout Marin County.
SALARY: This is a one-year position with the possibility of renewal. Salary is commensurate with experience, with a strong health/vacation benefit package. Position
