Join Dr. Sylvia Earle and Todd Steiner, the Hope Spot Champion for the Cocos-Galapagos Swimway Hope Spot, for a discussion about this critical marine migration highway and what it will take to formally protect it.
Known as the Cocos-Galapagos Swimway, this Hope Spot is a 120,000-kilometer migratory underwater highway that connects the National Parks of two sovereign nations – Costa Rica’s Cocos Island National Park with Ecuador’s Galapagos Marine Reserve – both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Dr. Sylvia Earle, Founder of Mission Blue
Dr. Sylvia Earle is the Founder of Mission Blue and a National Geographic Society Explorer in Residence. She is called “Her Deepness” by the New Yorker and the New York Times, “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, and “First Hero for the Planet” by Time Magazine. She is an oceanographer, explorer, author and lecturer with a lifetime of experience as a field research scientist, government official, and director for corporate and non-profit organizations.
Todd Steiner, Executive Director of Turtle Island Restoration Network
Todd Steiner is an ecologist and the founder and executive director of Turtle Island Restoration Network, an ocean advocacy and research NGO with offices in California, Texas and Costa Rica. He has more than 30 years’ experience in environmental protection and education. He currently serves on the IUCN Marine Turtle Specialist Group, NOAA-DFG Priority Action Coho Team: Technical Working Group, and on the Center for Biological Diversity Board of Directors. He holds an MS in Biology and lives in Forest Knolls, CA.
Brett Loveman (Moderator), Director of Communications of Mission Blue
Brett directs Mission Blue’s communications program as well as shoots video for the expeditions program. As the son of an original national organizer for Earth Day, Brett grew up in a family dedicated to preserving the integrity of our environment. Brett graduated from Tufts with a degree in International Relations and has focused his career on producing communications strategy, content marketing and video production for organizations that better our planet. Having signed on over 250 Mission Blue partners since 2012, Brett continues to grow the network. Brett plays professional jazz piano and enjoys hiking and sailing in the Bay area.
