SUMMARY:Cocos Island Dive Expedition 2026
DESCRIPTION:We are extremely excited to share that we will be headed back to Cocos Island National Park and World Heritage Site this coming June 2026\, and you have the opportunity to join us on a 10-day scuba and research expedition! \nCocos Island is the only island in the Eastern Tropical Pacific with a tropical rainforest\, and is home to large populations of scalloped hammerhead sharks\, white tip reef sharks and a number of endemic fish that occur nowhere else on the planet. Cocos is also the location of much of our scientific research to gather critical data for the success of the Cocos-Galapagos Swimway campaign. \nWhat: A 10-day liveaboard adventure to experience\, view and photograph the incredible marine biodiversity of Cocos Island\, as well as participate in crucial shark and sea turtle migration research. \nWhen: June 25th through July 5th\, 2026 \nWhere: The expedition will be supported by the Undersea Hunter Group\, which has been operating expeditions to Cocos Island since 1990 or Aggressor Adventures. They are committed to top-notch dive experiences\, vessels and service and has operated expeditions for National Geographic\, Sylvia Earle and many other world-renowned ocean explorers and conservationists! \nWhy: Your participation will not only help fund this important research trip\, but also give you the opportunity to participate in over 20 dives with sharks\, rays and massive schools of fish! SUMMARY:Show Up for Point Reyes: Protect Restoration and Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Next week brings an important moment for the future of Point Reyes National Seashore. On April 16\, federal agencies and conservation partners will host a public open house to discuss management of the park’s grasslands. It may sound routine\, but there is growing concern that this meeting could be used to justify rolling back the major restoration progress achieved just last year.\nIn 2025\, an agreement removed most commercial cattle grazing from Point Reyes. That outcome followed years of advocacy and legal pressure\, including efforts led by Center for Biological Diversity\, Resource Renewal Institute\, and Western Watersheds Project. Turtle Island Restoration Network has also been deeply engaged in the fight to protect Point Reyes and push for a transition toward ecological restoration. \nThe agreement ended years of ecological damage tied to ranching\, protected tule elk from under threat of culling to accommodate livestock\, and created a path toward restoring native ecosystems. \nNow that progress is at risk. Livestock industry interests are lobbying the United States Department of the Interior to overturn the agreement\, return cattle\, and even restore dairy operations in the seashore. \nMost concerning\, there are credible concerns that the Department of Interior support this effort\, and undo the hard-fought progress for the seashore\, wildlife\, and wilderness. \nWe are all aware that the Trump administration is reckless\, so there’s no telling where this will land. The April 16 meeting will not include public speaking\, but written comments will be collected. That makes it especially important for supporters of restoration to attend and clearly express their views. A visible\, engaged public presence can help ensure that this process is not misrepresented as opposition to conservation. \n\nMeeting Details\n\n 	\nWHAT – Point Reyes National Seashore Open House\n\n 	\nWHEN – Thursday\, April 16th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM\n\n 	\nWHERE – West Marin School Gymnasium @ 11550 Shoreline Hwy\, Point Reyes Station\n\n\nIf you attend\, consider submitting comments that support a cattle-free park focused on ecological recovery\, wildlife protection\, and public access. DESCRIPTION:The Marin Monarch Working Group (MMWG) is leading a field visit to several monarch waystations in Marin County on July 29. Participants will take part in the Western monarch bioblitz\, a citizen science project\, photographing and recording information about the local Western monarch population during the summer breeding season. The monarch bioblitz takes place between July 25 and August 3rd\, 2025. Please RSVP by July 26th. Field trip is limited to the first 20 participants who sign up.  \nSchedule: \n9:30am – Meet at Home Ground Habitats to carpool to Novato sites (optional) – \nNote: Do not park your car on Slowdown Drive\, which is directly across from Home Ground Habitat. Park on the road outside of the gate of Home Ground. \nMorning field visits in Novato between 10am and 12:30pm: \nVisit private garden in Novato and milkweed drift at Audubon site Deer Island (Simmons slough). \n12:30pm – Reconvene at Home Ground Habitats for lunch with food provided by MMWG \nMonitor the milkweed at Home Ground Habitats. \nAfternoon field visits in Novato between 1:30pm and approximately  4pm: \nAlameda del Prado\, Marcia Basalla’s median and county meadow\, and Marin Humane \nGeneral Information about the Western Monarch Bioblitz: \nGetting a good picture of a monarch butterfly is not easy. They are a restless lot\, flitting quickly among the milkweed and pollinator plants during the summer. But scientists and environmentalists need to know their numbers and their whereabouts. And they rely on community members to take and submit photographs that can be combined into a continent-wide dataset. You don’t have to be an entomologist or a photographer to participate. We need all hands on deck! \nThis collection effort will be happening across Canada\, Mexico and the US during the International Monarch Monitoring Blitz fromJuly 25 through August 3\, 2025. This is when monarchs are the most numerous and widely distributed across North America.  \nThe idea is for community members to go out during this period and take pictures when and where they can expect to see a monarch. You can go on your own\, with a friend\, or join a group (see below for details). \nHow do you know exactly what to do? Here are the basics: \n·       If you live in an area that is typically home to monarch butterflies\, go outside and look for monarchs – butterflies\, caterpillars\, and eggs — and for milkweed. You can visit local parks\, gardens\, roadsides….anywhere! \n·       Sign in the iNaturalist app or to the monarch milkweed mapper website (monarchmilkweedmapper.org) and submit your data. The data will be organized by a group of co-sponsors spread throughout the continent who will then share it among themselves and with other scientists and the media. \nThe Western Monarch Milkweed Mapper website has lots of helpful information about how to identify monarchs and milkweed\, how to photograph them\, and how to submit your data.
