The Galveston Art League will be offering a Children’s Art Camp every Wednesday in July. The theme of all four weeks is “Turtles and the Sea.” The Art Camp will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on July 9th, 16, 23rd, and 30th at the Art League gallery, 2117 Post office. The fee for each class is $15 per child and includes both lunch and all art supplies. Talented art teachers will assist children in creating a work of art that can be taken home at the end of each session and, at the same time, use the art project to teach the children about sea turtles and sea life.

Children may attend individual classes or they may enroll for all four, but since there will be a different art project and different educational emphasis each week, students can benefit by attending all the classes.

Mary Ann Taylor will teach the first two classes. On July 9th, the project will be “Sea Turtles on Driftwood” and on July 16th, the class will be on “Water Sea Creatures.”

Betty Pimm will teach the July 23rd class, “Sea Turtles,” which will provide an opportunity to look closer at turtles and their life. She will be joined by Joanie Steinhaus from the Sea Turtle Restoration Project. Joanie will be talking about marine debris and teach the kids how to make reusable bags out of old tshirts, in an effort to reduce the number of plastic bags on the island.

On July 30th, Rachel Stokes will focus on “Surfing the Sea” and Shelley Du Puy, the Educational Coordinator at NOAA Flower Garden Banks, will be a luncheon speaker and provide a slide presentation.

Each class will also have an assistant teacher to help children with their projects The Galveston Art League is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that is celebrating its centennial this year. Providing classes for children has been one of their goals since their inception and the League holds both summer workshops and juried shows for school age children every year.

An enrollment form for the Art Camp is posted on the Art League’s website, www.galvestonartleague.com. The form and payment should be sent to Galveston Art League, P.O. Box 3403, Galveston, TX 77552.
