Fall 2017 Legal Externship Opportunity in Environmental Litigation

Turtle Island Restoration Network has an opening for a part-time legal extern to work with our experienced environmental attorneys to protect and conserve ocean and coastal watershed habitats, protect endangered species of whales, fish, sea turtles and sea birds, and address threats from climate change, commercial exploitation, anti-environmental governmental actions and other threats.

During the Fall of 2017, the Legal Extern will work primarily on Federal court litigation involving a variety of environmental, wildlife and natural resource laws including the Endangered Species Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Management Act. The Legal Extern will work directly with in-house legal staff that will provide supervision, training and mentorship in environmental law and practice.

The Legal Extern should be a third-year student or recent graduate of an accredited law school with strong research, analysis and writing skills, and familiarity with Federal civil procedure. Experience with Federal environmental law and/or litigation experience is a plus but not required. A good attitude, the ability to work independently but as part of a team, and a strong motivation to learn how to use law to protect the environment are all requirements.

This position will be managed out of the main office in Marin County, but most work can be done remotely. Availability for frequent remote conferencing and an occasional appearance at the office will be necessary. Time commitment may be flexible to match availability and other commitments. The externship term will run through the end of 2017. This is an unpaid position and does not offer benefits.

Turtle Island Restoration Network is committed to fostering an organizational culture of diversity and inclusion. Please direct all inquiries and applications to Andrew Ogden, Senior Attorney and Legal Program Director, at aogden@tirn.net. All applications of interest must include a cover letter, resume and writing sample.
