Operation Safe Seafood: Marin County
Seafood consumption is the primary source of mercury exposure in the U.S. according the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). A nationwide study conducted by EPA
scientists revealed that one of every ten women of childbearing age – nearly 7 million
women – had elevated levels of mercury concentration in their blood. Mercury is a potent
neurotoxin and poses a serious health risk to the unborn fetus. Mercury levels in women
living on the West Coast are second only to the Northeast.
