Turtle Island signed onto a letter, with Food and Water Watch and over 70 organizations, urging Governor Brown to shutdown of all oil and natural gas activities at the Aliso Canyon Storage Facility in Los Angeles County.
Aliso Canyon, in an unacceptable state of disrepair, is a threat to residents.
According to SoCalGas, the average age of a well at Aliso Canyon Storage Facility is 52 years, with eight wells having been subjected to internal and external corrosion for over 81 years. SoCalGas operates 229 storage wells at Aliso Canyon, and over half of them are over 58 years old. The unacceptably poor state of infrastructure could lead to displacement of more residents, as happened to those from Porter Ranch.
Shutting Down Aliso Canyon, and Other Fossil Fuel Facilities, Prevents Damage to our Oceans
Turtle Island is seizing this opportunity to help protect residents by encouraging a move away from fossil fuel use. This will protect not only the residents of Los Angeles County, but also the residents of the oceans, like sea turtles and sharks. The cumulative effects of climate pollution are severe, and they are already visible: violent storms, drought, floods, acidifying oceans and altered growing seasons. As stewards of the oceans, we’re standing up to climate change contributors.
