Volunteers were busy at Turtle Island headquarters in west Marin County making signs and costumes for NorCal’s version of the People’s Climate March, which will descend on Oakland’s Merritt Lake Sunday, September 21st from 2-5PM.
The event at Merritt Lake is one of more than2000 events planned in over 150 countries planned just ahead of the climate summit at the United Nations on Tuesday where UN delegates from around the world are expected to hold high-level discussions that will potentially lay the groundwork for a global agreement on emissions next year in Paris.
“We will add our voices and creativity to the worldwide movement to demand a global agreement to dramatically and rapidly reduce global warming pollution,” said Catie Clune, Education Specialist and Outreach Coordinator for Turtle Island who is helping to organize carpools from Marin to Oakland on Sunday.
Some NorCal activists left the SF Bay Area headed to New York City on September 15 on the “People’s Climate Train” (http://peoplesclimatetrain.weebly.com ) which will be picking up activists and concerned citizens in Sacramento, Reno, Salt Lake City, Denver, Chicago and more, before arriving in NYC on Thursday the 18th. Along the way train commuters will participate inteach-ins, trainings, mixers, and movement-building.
The Lake Merritt event is being advertised as a family-friendly event, with children’s activities planned. The rally will be on the shore of Oakland’s Lake Merritt, just a few short blocks from the Lake Merritt BART station, and bike racks will also be provided! Dozens of sponsoring and endorsing organizations will be part of a “Climate Fair”, with tables for literature and discussion.
The Goals and Demands of the People’s Climate Rally include:
- A global agreement to dramatically and rapidly reduce global warming pollution
- A world with an economy that works for people and the planet
- A world safe from the ravages of climate change
- A world with peace and justice, good jobs, clean air and water, healthy communities
