Go Single-Use Plastic Bag Free from Earth Day to Memorial Day

Join us, Surfrider Foundation & the City of Galveston, Texas – Government for the 30 Day No Single-Use Plastic Bag Challenge! Pledge to go single-use plastic bag free now until Memorial Day 2016…& beyond!

The City of Galveston has joined our campaign and is encouraging everyone to “take the challenge” of going single-use plastic bag free from April 22nd, Earth Day, to May 30th, Memorial Day and beyond. This is in support of our  “Bring the Bag” campaign, an effort to raise awareness and reduce the negative impact of single-use plastic bags on Galveston Island.

It is estimated that over 22,176 single-use plastic bags are used per person per lifetime, and that states spend upwards of $300 million in their cleanup. Marine wildlife ingest and become entangled in single-use plastic bags, and the bags break down into small particles that persist in the ocean. These particles absorb toxins and enter our food chain through fish, sea birds and other marine life.

To kick-off this event, you are encouraged to visit the “Bring the Bag” booth at UTMB’s Earth Day Celebration this Friday, April 22nd, between 10 AM to 2 PM. Make the pledge and then take your photo to spread the word! If you are a business owner, you can pick-up a window cling to display showing your participation and support of the campaign.
