(San Francisco Bay Area) March 23 2018 – Recognizing that chemicals commonly found in sunscreens and personal care products can be dangerous in marine ecosystems, Turtle Island Restoration Network has partnered with Stream2Sea to develop an educational campaign for its members.

“More and more people are beginning to realize that what they put on their bodies DOES make a difference,” notes Todd Steiner, Turtle Island Restoration Network’s executive director. “We’re finding microplastics in the Gulf of Mexico and currently urging the Maui County Council to ban the sale and use of coral-killing chemicals in sunscreen products. Stream2Sea is the only sunscreen tested by a third party to be reef-safe for coral larva, as well as fish and C elegans. Plus its products are sold in tubes made from sugarcane or jars manufactured using recycled milk bottles, saving our oceans from plastic debris.”

The partnership will include distribution of Stream2Sea’s “Ingredients to Avoid” card – also known as the no-no card – listing compounds that are not safe for the environment, as well as a cross-promotional link on the Turtle Island Restoration Network’s website where a portion of sales will be donated to the Network.

Turtle Island Restoration Network started as a small grassroots effort focused on researching and protecting olive ridley sea turtles in Nicaragua. Under Steiner’s direction it has grown to be a global organization with projects underway around the world and offices in California, Texas and Hawaii.

Stream2Sea was founded by award-winning cosmetic chemist and avid diver Autumn Blum specifically to manufacture reef-safe sunscreen and personal care products. “We’re delighted to be part of the Turtle Island Restoration Network,” Blum said. “Together we can support giant leatherback sea turtles gliding on currents, schooling hammerhead sharks in the Galapagos, spawning coho salmon in California creeks, and a better ocean future.”

Turtle Island Restoration Network (www.seaturtles.org) is a leading advocate for the world’s oceans and marine wildlife whose mission is to inspire and mobilize people around the world to protect marine biodiversity and the oceans that sustain all life on Earth.
