More than 2,000 people who suffer from a rare neurological disorder called Minamata disease agreed to accept a settlement proposal and abandon their lawsuits against the Japanese government and the company they say made them sick by dumping mercury and poisoning the fish. The disease was first diagnosed in 1956 and later was linked to the consumption of fish from southern Kyushu island’s Minamata Bay, where chemical company Chisso Corp. dumped tons of mercury compounds.
