Single-use plastic waste and pollution disproportionately burdens lower income, BIPOS and coastal communities. Through a grant from the Plastic Solutions Funds, Turtle Island Restoration Network and Perpetual staff and volunteers surveyed 45 clients of Galveston Central Church.
The goal of the surveys was to receive input from vulnerable members of the community on how a reusable foodware system can work for them. The grant also allowed the purchase and distribution of backpacks and winter hats, scarfs and gloves for participants.
One hundred percent of the participants notice litter in Galveston and do not like it, and they believe a reusable foodware system would reduce litter, help beaches and animals. Eighty percent would be willing to return a reusable cup to a collection bin, and fifty percent would be interested applying for a position when the system is ready to be launched. These listening sessions are key to understand the perspectives of the all members of the community and receive meaningful feedback on design choices.
