Turtle Island signed onto a letter to President Obama in August urging action to save the critically endangered vaquita—the smallest porpoise species found only in the northern waters of the Gulf of California.
With fewer than 100 individuals remaining, the vaquita is the most endangered cetacean species in the world. The vaquita is primarily threatened by legal and illegal fisheries.
Now, Mexico is considering a two year prohibition of fishing in certain areas to safeguard vaquitas. Plans will be announced on Nov.27th.
