Mercury Pollution Bill Signed by President

The Mercury Export Ban Act of 2008 (S.906), a bipartisan bill introduced in March 2007, will ban the export of mercury from the United States. While it does not directly address the problem of mercury in seafood, it will prevent mercury exposure in people in general and reduce the amount of mercury available to be released into the environment. The success of this bill may also lay the groundwork for new legislation to address the lack of action by the FDA on mercury in seafood during the Bush Adminstration.
