Two of TIRN’s major missions are to educate people about how they can help save marine mammals and better the environment.

These two goals came together recently when dozens of Marin County, CA high school students visited TIRN headquarters to learn more about our work on the environment and when 150 elementary students visited an ocean-going research vessel in Galveston, Texas.

On the politicalplastic-bag-turtle front, local and national TIRN advocates won a round in Texas. State politicians tried to enact a law that would essentially eliminate an existing ban on plastic bags. We asked you to call local senators, and you did, en masse. Your calls, and testimony from Joanie Steinhaus, Turtle Island Campaign Director Gulf of Mexico, helped!

In the United States, we are at a crossroads in the fight to defend sea turtles, whales, dolphins, and all the ocean wildlife we love. After nearly a decade of increasing protections from the landmark Paris Climate agreement, to the creation of the largest marine conservation area in the world, we are now facing a political wind that does not prioritize the environment.

With the recent completion of a new pollinator garden at our nursery, it’s time to take a look at numerous other projects getting underway at Turtle Island, with us and our partners.
SPAWN holds a seed starting class Wednesday, April 18 at our nursery from 1 – 3 pm.
